US SIF RELEASES STATEMENT ON ENVIRONMENTAL EXECUTIVE ORDERS
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2021 – US SIF: The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment today released a statement on President Biden's announcement of environmental Executive Orders on January 27, 2021.
Said Lisa Woll, CEO of US SIF:
“We are heartened by President Biden's announcement of initiatives to address the climate crisis and environmental policy. Sustainable investors have been addressing climate change for decades and it remains a priority issue. The US SIF Foundation's 2020 Report on Sustainable, Responsible and Impact Investing Trends found that climate change was the most important specific ESG issue considered by asset managers.
“We applaud the commitment of the Administration to integrate environmental justice into its core decision making on environmental issues and the climate crisis. The establishment of the White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council and a White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council will help ensure that environmental justice considerations are integrated into government policy.
“Low-income and Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities often bear the brunt of negative environmental impacts. US SIF's policy recommendations, “Towards a Just and Sustainable Economy,” requested that rules and regulations with significant impacts on frontline communities undergo an additional level of review and that the Administration create environmental justice accountability mechanisms.
“We commend the creation of the National Climate Task Force and the commitment to rebuilding the nation's infrastructure in a sustainable manner.
“We look forward to working with the Biden/Harris climate team to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis and to do so in a way that no longer lays a disproportionate burden on low wealth and communities of color.”
