USA Director, Tobacco Free Portfolios
We are thrilled to be expanding our reach in the USA. Tobacco Free Portfolios is seeking an exceptional new team member to become the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios. The successful candidate will work alongside a small but mighty global team, guiding the work of Tobacco Free Portfolios in the USA. 


The USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will:
  • Have qualifications in business, finance or economics and a minimum of ten years of experience in sustainable finance, ESG or finance more broadly. Experience in stakeholder engagement, advocacy and/or public health will be favored.
  • Have exceptional presentation and communication skills with the ability to present professionally to audiences including senior leaders in finance, business, Government and UN agencies.  
  • Be a natural ‘networker’ across a diverse range of situations, including one-on-one meetings and large conferences. The ability to influence and persuade, in good spirit, with respect, patience and diplomacy, is a crucial part of the role. 
  • Be comfortable working independently as well as thrive when involved in collaborative work with a highly energetic and productive global team.
  • Be self-sufficient, display initiative and proactively contribute to shaping the path forwards for Tobacco Free Portfolios in the USA. 
  • Have the availability and willingness to travel to attend conferences and related events when safe to do so, according to local health guidelines (although unlikely for 2021).

Requirements Key Responsibilities
- Advocacy
The key responsibility of the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios is advocacy for Tobacco Free Portfolios in the USA. To achieve this the successful candidate will be knowledgeable, professional and passionate. 
The key tasks to fulfill this responsibility are:
  • Develop a deep understanding of the subject matter (tobacco-free finance and tobacco-control), including relevant facts and examples as well as political, legal, financial and medical developments in the USA and globally.
  • Become acquainted with the current status regarding investment in tobacco companies by financial institutions based in the USA.
  • Together with the TFP team, contribute to a strategic work plan including identification of the best opportunities for advancement of tobacco-free finance in the USA. 
  • Become confident in presentation of Tobacco Free Portfolios’ materials to support individuals and organizations through the process of reviewing current position on tobacco and ultimately implementing tobacco-free finance policies.
  • Attendance and presentation at events relevant to Tobacco Free Portfolios.
  • Management of meeting logistics (virtual and in-person when deemed safe by local authorities)
  • Arranging and hosting regular ‘Roundtables’ with US finance leaders.
  • Participation in conferences, webinars and podcasts as appropriate.
  • Ongoing teamwork with members of the TFP team in Australia, the UK and France.
 
- Strategy
Together with the TFP team, the Tobacco Free Portfolios Board and the Global Advisory Council, the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will contribute to the strategic direction of Tobacco Free Portfolios in the USA. Specifically, the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will help guide a strategic work plan including identification of the best opportunities for advancement of tobacco-free finance in the USA.
 
- Organizational Operations
The USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will:
  • Be responsible for preparing and contributing to TFP reporting as required, including drafting of reports and presentations.
  • Be required to participate in weekly meetings with the CEO (+/- other members of the TFP team) and other TFP team meetings as required. 
 
- Funding and Research
To ensure the financial stability and sustainability of TFP, the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will contribute to exploring funding opportunities (through philanthropic donations and grants) where possible.
To support the case for tobacco-free finance and in order to build a robust evidence-base the USA Director for Tobacco Free Portfolios will request and contribute to research in relevant fields. 
 
- Expected schedule - Daily work
In addition to tasks listed under ‘Advocacy’ above:
  • Meetings with leaders in finance. These will largely be one-to-one meetings with a view to engaging with sustainability leaders, investment teams, executive teams and Boards of major financial organizations.
  • Attendance at finance events – Mainstream events for the pension, banking, insurance and asset management sector, covering topics such as investment trends, sustainable/responsible investment and approach to controversial sectors.
  • Attendance at mainstream health events (expected to be once or twice per year) – Covering public health, tobacco control, commercial determinants of health etc.
  • Attendance at other events as required (ie. Public policy, philanthropy events etc.)
  • Completion of other tasks as requested by the CEO and Board, from time to time.
