Director, U.S. Policy and Outreach
https://www.sasb.org/about/careers/director-of-us-policy-and-outreach/
The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB)’s mission is to help businesses around the world identify, manage, and report on the sustainability topics that matter most to their investors. SASB Standards identify the subset of environmental, social, and governance issues most relevant to financial performance in each of 77 industries. SASB is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Standards matter because progress on disclosure brings us closer to progress on performance. When investors can compare companies and direct capital to the ones best managing business-critical sustainability issues, capital markets and society are more resilient as a result. At SASB, we believe the capital markets are a powerful lever of change for a more sustainable and just world. We need transparency at scale to enable this lever. We are a dynamic, fast-growing organization that has quickly gained market support. Leading global investors support SASB Standards as a core component of corporate disclosure. We develop products, resources, and education to support the adoption and use of our Standards and are funded by a mix of earned income and grants. We have a talented staff and executive team, with our work overseen by two high-profile boards, with previous experience at the FASB and SEC, and the Big 4 accounting firms, major asset owners and asset managers, companies, and academia. Our work is supported by major institutions and forward-thinking individuals. Are you right for our mission and this role? Please make your case in your cover letter. Job Summary Your idealism drives you with a strong desire to improve the world, and you are also a pragmatist: someone who understands how decisions are made and who makes them, whether through legislation, regulation, or other policymaking. You know the levers of change —and how to work with others to achieve consensus and results. You have a wonkish side and dive into research and technical papers so you can analyze a situation and marshal facts and evidence in support of your goals. But at your core you are a people person—reaching out and cultivating relationships, where you can fully engage in nuance, uncover details, and make a case for your cause. You may have worked on other issues in the past, but you are strongly drawn by SASB’s belief that the capital markets are a powerful lever for building a more sustainable and just world. SASB seeks a Director of US Policy and Outreach to drive its policy efforts in the US. You will work with our CEO, communications team, and Board to influence policy and policymakers across the worlds of accounting, financial regulation, business and capital markets. REPORTS TO: CEO Areas of Responsibility SASB’s work is fast-paced and, while the primary areas of responsibility are as follows, we value adaptability and a collaborative mindset. Outreach Manage relationships with US government agencies and related entities, as well as key DC-based business, investor, accounting and sustainability organizations Identify the key decision-makers and influencers related to SASB’s goals Educate decision-makers and influencers about SASB and the sustainability disclosure field Cultivate new relationships to broaden SASB’s network and expand our voice Direct the overall relationship management process and serve as primary contact in most cases Help educate SASB’s US stakeholders about policy developments in the sustainability disclosure field – both in the US and globally Represent SASB at key conferences and events Policy Monitor policy developments at key institutions and lead development of SASB’s US public policy positions Coordinate across SASB to ensure that US policy positions are consistent with SASB’s positions in other major markets Analyze proposed legislation, rulemaking, and other policy initiatives and work with colleagues to determine SASB’s views Collaborate with the Editorial Director for Policy, who leads development of written responses as warranted (comment letters, white papers, Op-Eds) Work with pro bono legal counsel as needed to shape responses Supervisory Responsibilities No direct reports at present, but Director will own this function and collaboratively drive the efforts of other staff members in pursuit of US policy and outreach goals.
