Program Associate – Climate and Environmental Justice (Full-time)
Founded almost 50 years ago, ICCR is a pioneer coalition of over 300 active institutional investor members representing faith-based communities, socially responsible asset managers, labor unions, and others who leverage their investments as a catalyst for change. ICCR members work in coalition to engage the world's largest corporations on a range of social and environmental issues impacting communities in the U.S. and globally, including human rights; climate change; food justice; sustainable water policies; health equity; and corporate influence via lobbying and political spending.
As part of ICCR’s strategies to address the climate crisis, ICCR members engage as investors with the electric utilities sector on a “Just Transition” to a clean energy economy. In order to meet the demands of a clean energy economy, companies must address not only the changes in business plans and practices necessary to stay within the 1.5°C limit, but must do so within a “Just Transition” framework that links their support for necessary climate action with commitments to labor standards, human rights, and inclusive growth—with a focus on the workers and communities who contribute to and are affected by the transition. ICCR members also (1) engage oil and gas companies and gas utilities on the strategically important need to reduce methane emissions and on greater disclosure of methane management, (2) engage major banks on the need to align their financing with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and (3) engage leader and laggard companies on the importance of aligning their climate lobbying with Paris.
Summary of Position: The Program Associate will work with ICCR’s Program Director on Climate and Environmental Justice to help support two of ICCR’s climate campaigns, specifically on Just Transition and Methane. This will include support for investor work to: (1) engage energy utilities on a range of just transition issues, including on appropriate governance oversight of the transition to a clean energy economy, labor concerns and robust stakeholder engagement to ensure a just transition, (2) support federal and state regulations that minimize methane emissions, and (3) engage with oil and gas companies and gas utilities to improve industry disclosure around methane and encourage adoption of best practices to limit emissions.
 Work will include:
  • Conducting corporate research to inform engagements with key companies;
  • Networking and coordinating with key stakeholders on ICCR’s Just Transition work, including with labor groups, community groups, and NGOs.
  • Providing administrative support for investor actions, including disseminating and tracking sign-on letters, tracking investor actions, and entering corporate engagements and related actions in ICCR’s Shareholder Exchange database;
  • Drafting issue briefs and backgrounders, company profiles, presentations, updating lists & recording meeting minutes;
  • Benchmarking companies that ICCR members have engaged on their commitments across a variety of sectors; and
  • Providing other program support as needed.
