Chief Operating Officer
US SIF seeks a Chief Operating Officer to join our team.  This is an opportunity for a highly experienced professional to play a key senior role in the leading organization in the US advancing sustainable, responsible and impact investing.

Our mission is to rapidly shift investment practices towards sustainability, focusing on long-term investment and the generation of positive social and environmental impacts.  
Our strategic goals are:
  • Expand the number of firms and financial professionals practicing sustainable investment and expand the membership of US SIF.
  • Broaden sustainable investment expertise and use of best practices by providing high quality information, education and other tools.
  • Educate and engage with federal and state level policy makers and regulators to advance legislation and regulation that is supportive of sustainable investment.

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER POSITION
 
This is an opportunity for a highly experienced professional to play a key senior role in the leading organization in the United States advancing sustainable, responsible and impact investing. 
 
Reporting to the CEO, the COO will participate on the senior management team and will lead the implementation of our Strategic Plan and corresponding Annual Operating Plan, including ongoing oversight and reporting against these plans. She or he will also play a lead role in the development of future strategic plans.  The COO supervises the Operations/Membership team. 
 
The COO will drive excellence in US SIF’s internal operations and systems.  She or he will play a key role in the day to day management of the organization (particularly when the CEO is out of the office) and will further enhance systems for team development, including staff goal setting, performance reviews and training.  She or he will also help manage the board of directors, including preparation for board meetings.    This full-time position is based in Washington, DC and offers many opportunities for professional growth, creativity and collaboration. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

Team Development/Supervision

  • Oversee and direct the work of the Operations/Membership team which handles general financial management including the audit and 990s, staff on-boarding and off- boarding, human resources and organizational operations, the renewal process for members as well as onboarding of new members and development of membership materials.
  • Manage development of yearly staff goal setting and staff review process. 
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
  • Lead searches to fill staff openings as they arise.
 

Operations

  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Drive operational excellence across the organization, refining and creating systems and processes.  
  • Work with consultants to ensure maintenance of up to date personnel policies and procedures.     

 

Membership Management

  • Provide leadership for a robust member outreach and retention program.
  • Work with Membership Manager on renewals, onboarding of new members and the creation of high-quality membership materials.  
 
 Organizational Leadership and Strategic Planning
  • Monitor and drive implementation of our strategic plan by maintaining forward movement by the staff on organizational objectives and goals and tracking and reporting on strategic plan progress.  
  • Lead development of the annual operating plan and budget.
  • Identify external opportunities that will help advance US SIF’s strategic goals. 
  • Assist CEO with board management and preparation for board meetings; present to the board at meetings as needed and manage relevant committees (audit, 401k, nominating committees).
  • Work with CEO/other staff to submit, track and report on foundation proposals. 
  • Work closely with CEO to ensure quick responses to issues as they arise.

Requirements REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:      
  • At least 15 years of experience, at least 5 of which are in a senior management role.
  • Entrepreneurial and flexible approach to organizational management and development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and work effectively with senior management, staff and board members. 
  • Experience in and passion for sustainable and impact investment.  Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and communicate key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and track multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Familiarity with AMS/CRM systems. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to US SIF’s mission, sense of humor, curiosity, integrity, and collegial and positive attitude.
  • Bachelor’s degree. 
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Work experience with non-profit membership organization and membership recruitment.
  • Experience with event or conference planning. 
  • Experience in leading a website refresh.
